The city of Anderson, IN, is located in the central part of the state, a little over 40 miles northeast of Indianapolis. Although it is a relatively small urban area, Anderson is not far from great parks and beautiful nature reserves where locals and visitors can enjoy some time in nature and practice a variety of outdoor sports. Whether you are planning a day trip or a weekend escape, these are some spots you should not miss while in the area.
3 Great Parks Near Anderson, IN
1. Ford Harrison State Park
Welcoming over 900,000 visitors each year, Ford Harrison State Park is one of the most popular day trip destinations among families and groups of friends from Indianapolis, Anderson, and other nearby towns and cities in the region. This extensive nature reserve covers about 1,700 acres of territory and opened its doors to the public in 1996. Some popular activities in the park include hiking, jogging, picnicking, horseback riding, wildlife watching, fishing, and ice fishing.
Ford Harrison State Park charges a daily entrance fee of $7 for in-state visitors and is open year-round between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Located a little over 25 miles southwest of downtown Anderson, it can be reached in about 40 minutes by car, driving along route IN-67. Some of the spots you should check out while in the state park include the Museum of 20th Century Warfare and the interpretive center.
2. Summit Lake State Park
Located about 25 miles east of downtown Anderson, Summit Lake State Park is another great spot to spend some time away from the city and relax in a beautiful nature reserve. Covering almost 2,700 acres of territory, this park features an 800-acre lake, as well as an extensive woodlands forest and a series of designated wildlife areas. Getting here from the city center takes a little over half an hour, making it an excellent day trip destination.
As its name indicates, the main attraction of Summit Lake State Park is a large reservoir located right in the center. Home to healthy populations of largemouth bass, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, brown bullhead, and pumpkin sunfish, it provides plenty of opportunities for anglers. Other popular activities in the area include boating, swimming, picnicking, hiking, and mountain biking. A designated campsite with running water and electric hook-ups is located in the southwestern end of the park.
3. Mounds State Park
Featuring a series of ceremonial mounds built by the Adena Native American civilization, Mounds State Park is another popular destination among tourists from all over Indiana, welcoming about 400,000 visitors yearly. This state park covers an area of a little over 250 acres and was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1973. Getting here from downtown Anderson takes less than 10 minutes by car, driving east along Mounds Road.
