1: Mounds State Park
Mounds State Park, home to the prehistoric indigenous Adena peoples, lies tucked away near Madison County. Exhibiting ten unique earthworks built by the ancient Adena people, this park is rich in the history of humankind. The largest earthwork, referred to as the Great Mound, is estimated to have been constructed around 160 B.C. and used for the viewing of astrological alignments during religious ceremonial gatherings. 2: Summit Lake State Park
Located near New Castle, lies the 2680 acres of Summit Lake State Park! A large portion, 800 acres, of this park is made of water in the form of a beautiful lake! Lined with sand, you can sit near the lake soaking your feet while admiring the beautiful view of the lake and tree line. Fishing, birdwatching, and boating are among the many activities able to be enjoyed in this park!
After becoming Indiana’s 19th state park in 1988 it became a local favorite. Four trails are marked in the park ranging from three-quarters of a mile to 2 miles. With varying views of different landscapes, each trail is accessible to beginners and the experienced alike. Be sure to stick to the marked trails as a measure not to get lost in the expansive park!
3: Fort Harrison State Park
Fort Harrison, sometimes referred to as Fort Ben, pays homage to Fort Benjamin Harrison a U.S. army base active from 1906 to 1991. Named after the 23rd president, Fort Harrison exhibits former military and war landmarks, such as a World War II prisoner of war camp. Alongside the rich history lies the beautiful landscape. Fall Creek flows freely through the northside of the state park, allowing for canoeing and various other water activities.
With 6 trails accessible throughout the park, you’ll effortlessly be able to choose the right trial for you. Ranging from 1 mile to 4.2 miles, the landscapes and difficulty levels vary allowing for continuous enjoyment!
